Spray-on or blown-in cellulose fibre insulation is approved by the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB), the Canadian Construction Material Council (CCMC), the National Research Council (NRC), the National Building Code (NBC), the Underwriters Laboratory of Canada (ULC) and the Cellulose Insulation Manufacturers Association (CIMA).

Why is Borate Important

A less well known function of these borates is their ability to prevent formation of mould, mildew and wood rot. This unique characteristic of borates is becoming increasingly valuable as the trend toward tighter house construction increases the potential for moisture accumulation within the building envelope.

The construction of tighter houses has often resulted in a higher interior humidity and air pressure differential. These two factors have combined to increase the accumulation of condensation moisture in framing and sheeting components. These developments have created serious concern about structural failure from wood decay. particularly in the humidity areas of central and maritime Canada.

Hence, it is of considerable interest that field-testing shows the borate component of Cellulose fibre type insulation has the ability to prevent formation of destructive fungal spores. Furthermore, the fungicidal character of the borate compound also has the advantage of being offensive enough to small insects and vermin that they will avoid contact.
