Although the manufacture of materials containing asbestos was banned in the late 1970's, homes built into the 1990's are still found to have asbestos in their insulation.

The appearance of vermiculite can be seen, however you cannot tell if a product contains asbestos just by looking at it. The only way to tell is to have it tested by a laboratory.
